When wisdom teeth are aligned correctly and the gum tissue is healthy, they don’t have to be removed. Unfortunately, this occurrence is rare and the arrival of wisdom teeth is usually met with problems.
Wisdom teeth removal is necessary when the teeth are prevented from properly sprouting within the mouth. They may grow sideways, come out partially from the gum and even remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the jawbone as they seek pathways that will allow them to grow.
Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. The tissue covering the impacted tooth could become infected and inflamed. When they are partially sprouted, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and can cause infection, leading to swelling, jaw stiffness, pain and illness. This could potentially spread to nearby teeth and even to the surrounding bone and gums.
These procedures are generally very similar to normal extractions. The dentist will widen the tooth socket and then use a pair of dental forceps to move the tooth from side to side until it's loose enough to be removed entirely. If the molar is deeply impacted, a surgeon may need to make an incision in the gums or remove some bone as well. The incision will be closed with stitches and dissolve within ten days.
